The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The chosen design for a collaborative installation for The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, to add to their current collection of sculptures. The hand was chosen as it links to their traditional methods of gardening still used, and represents natures hand and its vulnerability, asking for kindness.

A photo from the process of building the structure supporting the wicker hand for The Lost Gardens of Heligan. We built the base from repurposed scaffolding and plywood, made to the exact shape to be the skeleton of the hand.

The start of the willow weaving process, creating a natural flowing grid as a base for the wicker to attach it to, covering the structure and shaping seen here.
Base of the wicker hand sculpture, made with a focus on sustainability and structural stability. To mould to the exact shape of a hand we used straw stuffed in second-hand tights as a padding, then covered with a hessian scrim, and coatings of liquid latex.

I am a scenographer and installation artist, passionate about working in a variety of different areas, including but not limited to festivals, installations, theatre, outdoor events, and experiences. I have had opportunities to collaborate with many professional companies and clients, including The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Wild Rumpus, in which I have worked as both a designer, and taken a more hands on role as a maker, which I am keen to continue in my professional future. I am excited by the challenges of engaging in a new project and am not afraid of jumping in and working with new mediums.
My work throughout the last three years has mainly been focussed on the exploration of space, the different ways in which audiences interact with it, and how this shapes the experience and narrative.
