Aimee Laston, Set Designer & Prop Maker, Houdini’s Escape Room Experience

“I’m Aimee, Birmingham born and bred!

Prior to studying Design for Performance, I achieved a BTEC Diploma in Performing arts, I shortly after realised that performing was no longer for me and that I'd much rather be working behind the scenes. I then went on to study Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University for my first year before transferring over to Birmingham City University (Best decision I ever made!).

Whilst on the course we were are able to explore many different avenues including theatre, film, exhibition and events. Due to the support and guidance from the tutors, lecturers and technicians I was able to follow my passion in film and television and pursued this into my final year.

The course offers a variety of opportunities working with industry professionals. I was lucky enough to be offered an internship with Casson Mann and work on 2000 Trees Festival in my second year and then with Stax creations, The Forge Entertainment (BBC Drama - Dark Money) and Flatpack Festival in my third year. These were amazing learning opportunities that created a springboard for me when it came to my future employment.

Due to these experiences, I was able to develop a broad skillset when it came to joining the industry. With the confidence gained from my time on the course, I have worked on BBC’s Doctors, with The Birmingham Repertory Theatre and other Birmingham based television production companies.

I am now a Set Designer and Prop Maker for Houdini’s Escape Room Experience working on Tenpin Ltd Entertainment sites up and down the country. I know that I wouldn’t have had some of the amazing experiences or be where I am now if it wasn’t for studying on the course and I am very proud to be a part of the alumni ”
